Edge plasma effects in DIII-D impurity seeded discharges

چکیده
DIII-D, ELMing H-mode radiating mantle discharges have been obtained with electron density near the Greenwald density limit and a large fraction of the input power radiated inside the last closed flux surface, significantly reducing peak divertor heat fluxes. In these puff and pump discharges, the introduction of argon reduces particle flux to divertor tiles by a factor of 4 while peak heat flux is half of the no impurity value, suggesting that impurity seeding may be a useful control tool to reduce wall heat and particle fluxes in fusion reactors. A robust H-mode transport barrier is maintained and there are only small changes in the ELM energy and ELM frequency. 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 52.25.Vy; 52.55.Fa

Impurity Feedback Control for Enhanced Divertor and Edge Radiation in Diii–d Discharges
Radiated power fractions above 90% have been achieved in DIII–D using impurity feedback control. Heat flux reductions up to a factor of 6 and confinement enhancements of 1.6 × ITER-89P L–mode scaling have been obtained with a radiated power fraction above 70%. When the outer separatrix strike point was positioned for pumping with the DIII–D cryopump, ELMing H–mode (Type III ELMs) was triggered ...

Enhanced energy con®nement in discharges with impurity induced radiating power fractions, Prad/Pin, from 50% to 100% have been observed in the DIII-D tokamak with neon and argon gas pung. These radiating mantle enhanced con®nement discharges have been obtained in the DIII-D tokamak under a variety of conditions: diverted and limited con®gurations with both an H-mode and L-mode edge. Con®nement...
متن کاملDIII-D edge plasma simulations with UEDGE code including non-diffusive anomalous cross-field transport
Recently, both Alcator C-Mod and DIII-D tokamaks observed fast anomalous cross-field plasma transport in the SOL. These observations supported by theoretical studies have indicated that such transport is essentially non-diffusive and intermittent. We present the results of macroscopic plasma simulations with the UEDGE transport code including anomalous cross-field outward-directed convection fo...
متن کاملInterpretive Modeling of Simple-as- Possible-plasma Discharges on Diii–d Using the Oedge Code
Recently a number of major, unanticipated effects have been reported in tokamak edge research raising the question of whether we understand the controlling physics of the edge. This report is on the first part – here focused on the outer divertor – of a systematic study of the simplest possible edge plasma – no ELMs, no detachment, etc. – for a set of 10 repeat, highlydiagnosed, single-null, di...
متن کاملEX/9-3 Dust Studies in DIII-D and TEXTOR
Studies of naturally occurring and artificially introduced carbon dust are conducted in DIII-D and TEXTOR. In DIII-D, dust does not present operational concerns except immediately after entry vents. Energetic plasma disruptions produce significant amounts of dust. However, dust production by disruptions alone is insufficient to account for the estimated in-vessel dust inventory in DIII-D. Submi...
